Please read through the following information:

#1 Scientific Fact – Properties of Substances (Level 5)

Solids, liquids and gases are the states in which substances can exist in. Each of these states behaves differently to one another. In Science, we refer to the behaviour of a substance as a property. Water is a good example to imagine when we think of the properties of solids, liquids and gases because it is something that we are all familiar with. Water can take the form of ice, water and steam. When we think about the behaviour of each of these forms we get an understanding of the properties of solids, liquids and gases.

The shape of a substance and its ability to be compressed are common properties that are used when looking at solids, liquids and gases. Imagine ice, water and steam and think about the shape that each of these takes. Imagine them again and think about trying to compress them. Observations tell us that ice (solid) has a defined shape and cannot be compressed. Water (liquid) takes the shape of the bottom of its container and can’t be compressed. Steam (gas) spreads to fill its container and can be compressed.

#2 Scientific Fact – Physical Changes (Level 5 & 6)

All substances have a melting point and a boiling point. The melting point is the temperature at which a solid changes to a liquid. The boiling point is the temperature at which a liquid changes to a gas. These changes are physical changes and the temperature at which they occur differs depending upon the properties of the substance. For pure water the melting point is 0oC and the boiling point is 100oC.

Substances change from a solid to a liquid and then to a gas as the temperature increases. The name of the process for the change from a solid to a liquid is known as melting and the name of the process for the change from a liquid to a gas is known as evaporation. As these changes are physical changes they are reversible. This means that as the temperature decreases substances can go through the reverse process and change from a gas to a liquid and then to a solid. Gas undergoes the process of condensation when it becomes liquid. Liquids will become solids when the temperature is less than the melting point. This process is called freezing.

#3 Scientific Fact – Reversible and irreversible changes (Level 6)

Changes occur constantly in the world around us. Decreasing the temperature of a liquid will change it by freezing it into a solid. Water can change by simply mixing with and dissolving another substance. These examples are physical changes and can be reversed simply by increasing the temperature.

Changes that are irreversible also occur. These changes are called chemical changes and result in a new substance being formed. The new substance cannot be changed back into the substance that it started as. A colour change or the creation of bubbles is always a sign that an irreversible change has occurred.

Week Beginning: Monday 19th March
This week, you will continue to explore people in science. You will also view the "Lava Lamp" experiment below. Unfortunately, due to missing our science lessons last week, we aren't able to do this experiment ourselves. If you have your parents' permission, see if you can try this at home.

In the Newsroom
There are many stories in newspapers and magazines about people who are using the scientific method to learn about the world. Examples include doctors who are trying to cure diseases, environmentalists who are trying to preserve the earth’s resources and astronomers who are trying to answer questions about the universe.

Search the internet for a scientific article showing how science is being used to solve a problem or enhance knowledge. Present your findings in an interesting way on your iPad.

Connection to History
Ancient people believed many strange things about the earth and its place in the universe. For instance, ancient Greeks believed that the earth rested on the shoulders of Atlas. Later, people believed that the earth was flat and that humans could fall off the edge. Most people also believed that the earth was at the center of the universe.

Investigate and learn more about the scientists who discovered the true nature of the earth. What was the major discovery of Nicholas Copernicus? Johannes Kepler? What tools did these men use to test their hypotheses?

Fred Hollows


Fred Hollows (1929-1993) was a passionate ophthalmologist who became known for his work helping restore the eyesight of countless thousands of people in developing countries around the world. Fred held a special place in the hearts of many. According to Gabi Hollows, Fred's widow, he meant many things to different people. He was a husband, a father, a friend, a skilled ophthalmologist and, for a few politicians and bureaucrats, an irritating thorn in their side. But above all else, he was a humanitarian, which made him a terrific doctor. He truly believed it was the role of the doctor to serve, to help those in need.
